Carry-On Luggage Requirements

While luggage requirements and other airline regulations seem to be changing constantly, the acceptable carry-on sizes for most airlines seem to be fairly stable. The best way to determine the exact allowable carry-on dimensions for your flight is to check with on your airline’s Web site.

However, most airlines currently allow you to take carry-on bags that measure no more than 22 inches (56 cm) in length, 18 inches (45 cm) in width and 10 inches (25 cm) in depth for domestic flights. For international flights, the 20-inch carry-on is currently the most recommended size, which should add up to less than 45 linear inches (length + width + height). Oftentimes, airlines with intercontinental routes (between countries in Europe) allow 20-inch or less carry-on bags.

Do not forget that you also have the space under your seat for a “second item.” I often stuff my purse into a larger tote bag or backpack and place it under the seat in front of me, while keeping my bigger wheeled luggage in the overhead compartment so I can carry on more and avoid checking any luggage!

Peak Season Airfare Charges

You may notice a bit of an increase in summer airfares this season. That's because several major airlines have decided to implement additional peak season surcharges ranging from $10 to $40 depending on the day of travel and airline from mid-June to mid-August. But, there is one thing you can avoid and that's checked luggage fees! Let us help you travel with carry-on luggage only by teaching you to pack light! We have two packing light clinics scheduled this summer: Tuesday, June 8 at 7 p.m. and Tuesday, July 13 at 7 p.m.

Travel Tip: Clothing for Travel

When choosing clothing for travel, make sure to follow these guidelines:

  1. Choose items that can be mixed and matched. Stick to a color scheme - black, brown or khaki and include items that can be worn with more than just one other piece.
  2. Select versatile pieces (i.e., a black skirt that can go from day to night).
  3. Look for quick-drying tags (traveling light typically means DIY laundry and usually that is in hotel sinks. Wash these items at night and by morning they should be ready to pack).
  4. Don't play the "what if" game. If a prince asks you to dinner, then trust me, you will want to go shopping!
  5. Wrinkle-resistant features always help. No matter how good of a folder/packer you are, having items that are wrinkle-resistant is always helpful (and looks nicer).
  6. Limit your shoes! We try choosing our shoes first and then our clothing. That way you are not throwing extra shoes in at the end to go with select outfits. Try wearing one and packing the other. And, wear your heaviest and bulkiest on the plane.
There are plenty of more tips to come!

Cool New Product: Bucky Gusto Neck Pillow

We can barely keep the new Bucky Gusto Neck Pillow in stock and we have only carried it a short time! Unlike traditional inflatable neck pillows, the Gusto pillow’s asymmetrical shape helps to give you a “custom fit” no matter which way you sleep in your seat. The Gusto pillow has a SnapStrap to provide comfort for heads that like to droop forward and an easy to inflate valve that only takes one big breath to inflate and one touch to deflate. Plus, the Gusto pillow is PVC free!

Travel Tip: Photo of Packing Contents

When packing for your next trip, lay out all of your items and take a photo. The photo will help to serve as ‘proof’ in the event that your luggage is lost or an item is stolen. Plus, packing in advance is helpful in allowing you to be a more organized and efficient traveler. Packing early = packing smart and light (we hope)!

New Product Alert: The Vinni Bag

Say good-bye to your faulty and unreliable zip-lock bags and bubble wrap and hello to travel with wine (and other liquids and breakables) once again! The Vinni Bag is a reusable and inflatable package with protective air chambers that help you travel with fragile items. The Vinni Bags are designed to help protect your items against impact and leakage. Plus, they can withstand the fluctuations in altitude and temperature.
