While luggage requirements and other airline regulations seem to be changing constantly, the acceptable carry-on sizes for most airlines seem to be fairly stable. The best way to determine the exact allowable carry-on dimensions for your flight is to check with on your airline’s Web site.
However, most airlines currently allow you to take carry-on bags that measure no more than 22 inches (56 cm) in length, 18 inches (45 cm) in width and 10 inches (25 cm) in depth for domestic flights. For international flights, the 20-inch carry-on is currently the most recommended size, which should add up to less than 45 linear inches (length + width + height). Oftentimes, airlines with intercontinental routes (between countries in Europe) allow 20-inch or less carry-on bags.
Do not forget that you also have the space under your seat for a “second item.” I often stuff my purse into a larger tote bag or backpack and place it under the seat in front of me, while keeping my bigger wheeled luggage in the overhead compartment so I can carry on more and avoid checking any luggage!
